What is FODZYME® and how does it work?Updated 2 days ago
FODZYME® breaks down specific FODMAPs as you eat, helping reduce symptoms like bloating, gas, and discomfort. This guide covers what's in it, how it works, and how it fits into your diet.
What is it?
FODZYME® is a digestive enzyme supplement made with a patent-pending blend of natural microbial enzymes. When sprinkled on or mixed into food, the enzymes begin working immediately, breaking down problematic carbohydrates during digestion to prevent symptoms. FODZYME® does not work after symptoms start.
How does it work?
FODZYME® targets FODMAPs at the source (your food!) before they can cause issues. Its enzymes break FODMAPs into simpler sugars that are easier to absorb in the small intestine, reducing how much fermentable material reaches the large intestine where undigested FODMAPs typically trigger symptoms.
FODZYME® addresses three common FODMAP types:
- Fructans (garlic, onions, wheat, rye) using a novel fructan hydrolase
- GOS (galacto-oligosaccharides) (beans, lentils, legumes) using alpha-galactosidase
- Lactose (dairy products) using lactase
Does it change my food's nutrition?
No, FODZYME® does not meaningfully change the nutritional composition of your food.
FODMAPs make up only a small portion of most meals, even those meals that are considered high-FODMAP. Breaking them down into simple sugars has minimal effect on calories or macros. FODZYME® does reduce the prebiotic content of the FODMAPs it breaks down, though research shows that short-chain fatty acid production is lowered but not eliminated, suggesting some prebiotic benefit is preserved.
Taste and texture
FODZYME® is virtually tasteless and does not alter the texture of food when added. Customers report no noticeable change in flavor or consistency after sprinkling FODZYME® on their meals.
Adding high-FODMAP foods back to your diet
FODZYME® can help you reintroduce high-FODMAP foods, especially once you understand your personal triggers. Ideally, this works best after completing the FODMAP reintroduction phase without FODZYME®. That process helps you identify which FODMAPs affect you and in what amounts. Once you have that baseline, FODZYME® becomes a helpful tool during the personalization phase, allowing you to enjoy known trigger foods like garlic, onions, or dairy with reduced risk of symptoms.
This approach gives you both clarity (you understand your baseline) and flexibility (you can make exceptions when you want to).
Is FODZYME® intended to replace a low-FODMAP diet?
FODZYME® is not a replacement for the low-FODMAP diet, but it can work alongside it to reduce how restrictive someone needs to be. Some customers use it as a complement to a low-FODMAP approach, while others use it to avoid restriction altogether. The right approach depends on individual sensitivities and should ideally be discussed with a healthcare provider.
If you're new to low-FODMAP
If you've never followed a low-FODMAP diet, you can still try FODZYME®.
Use our Quick Start Protocol: apply FODZYME® to all meals for 5 days. This temporarily lowers your overall FODMAP load and helps you see whether FODMAPs may be contributing to your symptoms.
If you notice improvement, it's a good sign that FODMAPs are contributing to your symptoms and that FODZYME® can help you tolerate them. Now that you know you are FODMAP sensitive, you can begin identifying your specific triggers. As always, consult a registered dietitian or healthcare provider before starting any new supplement.
